Draining the water system

Draining the water system

Protecting your holiday home during freezing conditions is imperative.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD OUR FULL ADVICE - DRAINING DOWN PROCEDURE - FROM THE DOWNLOADS PAGE

The domestic water system, shower mixer valves, taps, pipes, boiler all require draining before there is a risk of frost. We advise that the park operator or a professional plumber should be contracted to undertake the draining and re-commissioning of your holiday caravan.

If you are unable to locate a suitable contractor and you are qualified to drain the water system, please follow the advise below; however Kendal Caravans cannot be held responsible for damage due to frost under any circumstances beyond our control.

  1. Turn off the water supply at the stop cock outside.
  2. Disconnect the caravan water inlet pipe from the stop cock.
  3. Flush all toilets and sponge any remaining water from inside the cistern.
  4. Put an adequate amount of suitable antifreeze in each toilet pan.
  5. Open all taps and shower mixer valves.
  6. Locate all the drain cocks underneath the caravan. (Each model has a different number of drain cocks) Note which drain cocks are for the central heating pipes.
  7. Remove all drain cocks, except those for the central heating system, water should run freely from the drain cocks.
  8. Using a compressor or stirrup pump, blow air from the each tap through the water system (not the shower valve) ensuring all water is removed from the taps and water pipes.
  9. The shower valve must be removed and all the water inside must be drained out.
  10. Some water heaters may be fitted with a plastic flow switch. If this is the case the flow switch should be removed by a qualified technician and should be placed in a frost free environment.
  11. Some boilers also have a drain screw on the underside, this must be removed. Please check the boiler handbook.

If your holiday caravan is centrally heated the heating system should contain a special anti-freeze solution. The solution should be checked to ensure that the concentration will be adequate for the winter period where your holiday home is situated. This relieves the necessity of draining the central heating system, however the domestic hot water system will need draining..
